Spoiler alert. They’re good. Damned good.
Let’s dive in a bit. And as always, we recommend to you that you start from the green and move back to wedges and then to irons when choosing a ball. Finally, move to headcover clubs. (At our speeds, spin is more important than anything else.) Our theory is that we take many more shots on and around the green vs. off the tee, so it makes more sense to “fit” our golf ball based on its short game performance than how far we hit it off the tee.
This ball took us a few days to dial in on the greens. Truthfully it felt amazingly like a ProV1x ball on the greens. We grabbed a sleeve and tested. Same slightly harder feel. Not any hotter. Just harder. And a touch “clicky”. But damned if they don’t roll the same way. A good putt, well struck does as you’d expect. That’s good! No surprises (predictability) is always the goal. With wedges, well, spin was the same for Wes as with his ProV1 (not x). For Tommy, same as his Bridgestone ball. (That ball has shown good spin numbers at our less-than-tour-swing-speeds.) Anecdotes matter and the bunker performance of the LA Golf ball was excellent and durability was terrific. Moving up the fairway, the 8-7-6 iron shots tended to not fade or draw as much as we’ve seen from our gamer balls (Wes, ProV1 and Tommy, his Bridgestone Tour B RX). Is that a good thing? We think so, but only if spin is where we need it or want it. Height and landing angle (“descent” on launch monitor) is more important to us than spin. It’s plenty spinny. But here’s where it excels. Take a headcover off and whether it’s a hybrid or a fairway wood and driver, the LA Golf ball flies just a scootch farther. For Tommy, 4-5 yards more driver carry and he’s long already. Wes saw the most remarkable gains (carry) with three wood and seven wood. Each about 6-8 yards further in the air, respectively. That’s not to be ignored. At all.
So, should you look at it? Yes, unequivocally so. If you can stomach the slight price delta over ProV1, sure, a dozen to try is a grand idea. Quality control is first rate. And the brand uniqueness is a plus, too.
