Game Improvement: Grey Dog Wes Gets Fit

Wes gets fit for clubs 2

A few weeks ago we (yup, including Wes) invited you to come along with the journey Wes takes this off-season in his effort to get fit…body, mind, golf.  Why get fit? Wes’s goal isn’t to repeat his “glory days” with scores in the 60s. That’s just not realistic. But a more attainable goal is to eliminate the scores in the 80s that increasingly have crept into his results in recent years. Yes, we still play for a few dollars but it’s much more about the enjoyment factor. Recall that our mission here at Grey Dog Golf is to help all of us “Play Smarter, Play Better, Play for Longer”. Learning to love the game again is a first step to that end, and one way to help get us there is to get fit! Taking a baseline measurement to start included some rather revealing numbers in Wes’s case! What could possibly go awry?! So here we go.

Wes, 66 years old on November 10 (also the USMC birthday, which is appropriate for a former Marine.)

blog carry distance

Body numbers:

  • 229 lbs on November 1, 2023
  • Blood pressure and all other routine “blood numbers” are a-ok
  • “Active” lifestyle; routinely does 14,000 “steps” daily (+/- 6.5 miles target)
  • Golfing about once a week

Golf numbers:

7 iron averages-

  • 75 mph club speed
  • 99 mph ball speed
  • 135 yards carry & 138 yards total
  • Dispersion +/- 5 yards

So…some work to do and he has embraced the challenge!  Working with a nutritionist and a dietician, let’s talk about the first two weeks.

Body numbers:

  • 221 lbs on November 14, 2023

Working with an instructor, the great Chris Stoudt, www.stoudtgolf.com Wes has shown some noteworthy improvements which began with a grip adjustment.

Golf Numbers:

Here are the current 7 iron averages-

  • 81 mph club speed (+6 mph)
  • 110 mph ball speed )+11 mph)
  • 148 yards carry & 153 yards total (+13 yards carry)
  • Dispersion … FORE LEFT!!!  (+ gazillion!  But that’s going to happen with a grip change and Chris is confident that it isn’t a concern!

Look, this is a measurable improvement and yes, Wes has more to go on the weight and strength numbers.  Stay tuned.  More to come as we continue to “Learn to love the game again.”
